Happy first day of winter! Here's a memory from a few years back. I'm hoping for more of the same this year. * I am living in a snow globe. Every handful of minutes, the wind visits the alders and maples and evergreens surrounding our house and sends a shower of white billowing about. Inside this globe, I sit in front of the woodstove and watch the orange glow on the other side of the tempered glass. The sounds of David Lanz's Christmas CD fills the house. To my left, our 15-foot ... continue reading...

Flashes
I rushed home from church at 11:00 this morning to get busy on a double-batch of dinner rolls and a crock-pot sized mound of mashed potatoes (the gravy was made last night). Some friends thought it would be nice to have Thanksgiving early this year, and added "How about if we do it before the Seahawks game?" Turkey? Stuffing? Seahawks? You don't have to ask me twice. While waiting for the rolls to rise, I thought I should use that time to tackle my out-of-control pantry. It was either that, or ... continue reading...
Giant Crock Pot Pesto Meatballs
The snow is just coming down like crazy ... you should see it! This is our second visit to Lake Tahoe during "winter." Technically, it's not winter yet, but this is the second time we've been snowed in. I am overjoyed about that. Here's what our deck looked like early this morning ... ... and here's the tree in front of our condo. Don't let that blue sky in the background fool you. It grayed right up again and started snowing within minutes of this shot. Yay! I had planned to make chili, ... continue reading...
Once More
"Cut my hair," she says, with that all-purpose, pleading tone, the one she uses for popsicles and new shoes and just one more game of cards. I don't want to cut her hair. She's twelve ... almost thirteen, and that means she owns an opinion or two. I'm not as "this or that" as I was last year, or the year before. I can't get away with bordering-on-funny anymore. She rolls her eyes and looks out the window at nothing -- hoping, I sense, to distance herself from my corniness. "No," I say. She ... continue reading...
Prophetic Nutty Bars
That was the craziest day I've had in a long time. No, that's not extreme enough. That was the craziest day I've EVER HAD. It all started innocently enough. I planned to spend the morning enjoying Gage, bake a pan of Nutty bars to send to North Dakota with Britt, and then see the two of them off on the train later in the day. Riiiight. (Insert ominous soundtrack here) Here's how the day actually went: 4:30 a.m. Get up with Gage while Dave takes Britt to work 8:00 Start making nutty bars. ... continue reading...
