So Zac edged out his dad finally. His newly measured 6'2" passed Dave by a mere inch, but that discovered inch threw Zac's shoulders back and filled his lungs and sent a rush of "maybe I can" running through his blood. "Hey, Dad —- let's arm wrestle." Dave just laughed at first, but Zac pestered him into agreement. They pushed back the runner and cleared the dishes from the end of the table (we’d just finished dinner ... beef stroganoff, in case you'd like to know) and propped their arms on ... continue reading...

One Year Bible: April 24
Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands Proverbs 14:1 To read today's portion of scripture, you can purchase The One Year Bible (paid link) or find the following in your Bible: Judges 2:10-3:31 Luke 22:14-34 Psalm 92:1-93:5 Proverbs 14:1-2 Something I witnessed long ago, and which has come back to me over and over. Dave officiated at a memorial yesterday for a woman from our church. Patsy was 71, a hard-worker, the possessor of a great sense ... continue reading...
“Five times better” Meatballs
I know I've got a good thing going when Dave tells me four times how good it is, then adds, "These meatballs are five times better than Ikea's, and four times better than Costco's." I had no idea my husband had spent so much time analyzing meatballs, but as long as mine came out on top, I don't really care how he reached those numbers. His parting suggestion was that we "eat them a lot." So that's the plan. And here's the recipe, my adaptation of Alton Brown's recipe: Ingredients 3 slices white ... continue reading...
All-Day French Onion Soup
Does the title scare you? I had to be truthful. It really is "All Day" French Onion Soup. In the spirit of full disclosure, you need to know that this is a recipe best made on those days when your car has been stolen, or you have a flat tire, or a tree has fallen across the driveway. You know. Those "I'm stuck at home all day so I should probably make the best of it" days. Because you're going to need it. But, oh ... the result! Delicious. The original recipe for this (found here) said it would ... continue reading...
Chicken Pot Pie, and I Don’t Care
Be honest. You're singing that song right now, aren't you? Once in awhile I substitute another phrase for "Jimmy Crack Corn." A few days ago, while scanning the breakfast menu at Nomz (our new favorite Marysville diner), I began quietly singing, "Chicken fried steak, and I don't care. Chicken fried steak, and I don't care. Chicken fried steak, and I don't caaaarrrrre! ..." until I looked up and saw Dave watching me with an expression that makes me think he thinks it might be time to put me away ... continue reading...
Home
I'm wishing my chicks were still this little. A post from 2005. Just on the other side of my window, beyond the sage curtains I hung recently, past the doubled reflection of gold and green and red and blue lights on our 10-foot tree, I see the black and bony outlines of the leafless maples in our backyard, splayed against a weakening, slate blue sky. Inside, we're warm. Dave is stuffing the stove with tinder dry logs. The heat from two crock pots (one with a roast for tonight; the other ... continue reading...
