I have never met a lemon I didn't like. When I was in my early teens, I came up with my first food-related invention: lemony V8 juice. It was a pretty simple recipe: one part lemon juice to three parts V8, topped with a big sprinkling of pepper. That's a lot of lemon juice, when you think about it. But it was only the beginning. I soon figured out how to make lemon bars, lemon-blueberry bread, lemon meringue, and Shaker lemon pie. That was followed by lemon curd, lemonade made with actual ... continue reading...

Wynken, Blynken and Nod … and a Poke Cake
And so it begins. Last night, my three sisters, one brother-in-law, and two nephews braved the elements and joined us in an impromptu going-away party for Zac. Two of my sisters left their car at the top of our hill and walked the quarter-mile downhill, across the trail, and back up hill, slogging through the remnants of all that snowfall last week. But no one wanted to miss the gathering. I really can't believe my oldest child is somehow old enough to sail away on a fishing boat headed for ... continue reading...
Chocolate-Oatmeal Snackin’ Cake
Well ... what follows is the post I started on Thursday morning, just a few hours before a ridiculous flu bug hit our house. I got it first, followed by Dave, and now Tera has it. Not sure if any of the three of us will make tonight's New Year's Eve party, but I have my fingers crossed. If we DO go, this is still what I'm bringing :) Happy almost New Year! I know I'm a few days early, but I'm in planning-mode, so that's what's on my mind. This Saturday we're having our usual New Year's Family ... continue reading...
Rum Cake
I think I know why pirates are so crazy about rum. They go on and on singing about how much they like to drink it, but the truth is they've got a baker-pirate down in the galley making this cake. They just can't figure out how to stick that in a song and still sound scary. You really must try this. It's absolutely the moistest cake you will ever make, and it gets better by the day -- although it rarely makes it to the three-day mark in our house. It's so good that my 15-year old requests it for ... continue reading...
Black-Bottom Cupcakes
We got our Christmas tree last Friday! Yes, you heard that right. Friday, as in, "the day after Thanksgiving." We've done this for several years now because the place where we go to cut it down is only open (for sure) on that weekend. It's run by two older couples who keep it open only as long as they feel like it, which is usually one weekend and once in awhile two. It's the only U-Cut place around here that still has trees as tall as we like them. I think ours is about 12' tall this year. In ... continue reading...
10 Utterly Delicious Things to Make With Oatmeal
So you stocked up on all your pantry essentials, and just for good measure you went ahead and bought the BIG bag of oats -- the 20 pounder. (Or maybe you were a little more conservative and just bought four pounds worth.) And you're proud of yourself for being so prepared. You're all, "Bring on winter!" (or a quarantine!) because you are prepared! But ... you can only eat so many bowls of the usual stuff ... oats, milk, maybe a little brown sugar. Sure, you can mix it up a bit and put the brown ... continue reading...
