Hillbilly Chili
A memory from another August … So we have our annual Chili Cook-off last Sunday. And just like every year, little paper donkeys hung on the walls of the church office. Honey-combed sombreros and chili peppers dotted the tables. A giant blow-up jalapeno bounced and jiggled in its pinned-up spot near the door. One by one, potholder-clad women carried in casserole dishes of cornbread–some plain, some cheesy, some flecked with peppers or corn or a little of both. One by one, confident-looking men strode in with their crock pots of chili. You could see by their faces that each of those men had already cleared a spot back home for…

One Year Bible: February 1
To read today’s portion of scripture, you can purchase The One Year Bible (paid link) or find the following in your Bible: Exodu(s 13:17-15:18 Matthew 21:23-46 Psalm 26:1-12 Proverbs 6:16-19 “Lord, I have loved the habitation of Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells” (Psalm 26:8). In December, we took our grandson out to see The Lights of Christmas at Warm Beach. Gage slept the whole way out there, so he was a little groggy and unimpressed when we woke him in the parking lot and eased him out of his car seat. “I want to go home,” was his first statement, despite the brilliance of a million…

How to Make a Birch Tree
Well, that’s not technically correct, because only God can make a birch tree. And I have all the more respect for Him after it took me hours and hours to make ten fake birch trees. You may never need this information, but then again, perhaps one day you’ll be kidnapped and held in a bizarre game of, “We’ll let you go if you can produce a birch tree out of nothing but chicken wire, sheets, paint and a glue gun.” It could happen. And then won’t you be so, so happy you read this post all the way to the end? First, the why. This past August, our church bought…

Wondering
There’s a brand new Scougale boy in the world … and he’s the third. I have every confidence that he will be as adorable as his brothers. I’ve yet to hold him, but I know this about him: all 8 lbs 8 oz and 21″ of Silas Roy appeared at 9:40 pm last night at The Special Delivery Co. in Arlington. I really, really love this family. Tuesday morning during Joyful Life, I got to hold Levi (the middle son) for a good half-hour in the nursery as we read the same book five times (his idea), sang songs (my idea) and both nearly had ourselves a nap. Here’s a…

Loved
A post from five years ago, which came to mind last night when I was met at the door of our church by three-year old Eli, a world-class hugger. Oh, how I adore my short friends! 🙂 The Josh in this post was gone for about three years, but he’s back now with his father, brother and sister. I’m so happy to have them back, but having a hard time with how much they’ve grown, and how much I’ve missed. It’s Wednesday night again, and once again, I’m taken with the sight of wiggly, front-row floor inhabiting boys. This time, it’s Corbin and Josh. They shimmy to Peter’s rhythm. They…

Sunday Dinner: Ham and Copycat Cracker Barrel Hashbrown Casserole
Updated 3/5/20 Oh, how I love Sundays! On the mornings when I’m on the worship team, I arrive early and get to hang out with some of my very favorite people on earth while we go through the morning’s worship set. Then people start showing up, and the hugging begins, along with the questions you ask people you haven’t seen in three long days, or seven. “How was your week?” and “How did that job interview go?” and “How is your friend we’ve been praying for?” Then we worship together, in an intimate, candle-lit downstairs room barely big enough for our growing church family, and when Dave takes the podium…
