“I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).
As I wrote in yesterday’s devotional, I take great comfort in knowing the great I AM is with me and ever watching over me. But until you know the reason for His constant, vigilant presence, it can be disconcerting.
One small boy had trouble with this concept when his Sunday school teacher first made him aware. “God is everywhere at once, and His eyes see all things.”
The boy thought a moment. “You mean … He sees everything I do?”
His teacher nodded.
“He sees when I’m mean to my sister?”
His teacher nodded again.
“And when I steal cookies I’m not supposed to eat?”
She nodded again.
The boy was quiet, thinking. And then he said, “I guess God is watching me all the time so He can catch me being bad, huh.”
“Oh, no!” She said. “God is watching you all the time because He loves you so much, He can’t take His eyes off of you.”
