10 Utterly Delicious Things to Make With Oatmeal
So you stocked up on all your pantry essentials, and just for good measure you went ahead and bought the BIG bag of oats — the 20 pounder. (Or maybe you were a little more conservative and just bought four pounds worth.) And you’re proud of yourself for being so prepared. You’re all, “Bring on winter!” (or a quarantine!) because you are prepared! But … you can only eat so many bowls of the usual stuff … oats, milk, maybe a little brown sugar. Sure, you can mix it up a bit and put the brown sugar on before the milk … but still and all, it’s going to get…

Crepe Love
If you asked me to describe Paris in one word, I would answer without a split second’s hesitation, “Lemon.” And then you would back away slowly with that, Please don’t hurt me, crazy person look on your face, and I would have to chase after you to try to explain, and it would just get plain awkward. So don’t ask. But … Paris really does taste like lemon. Perhaps that’s because every time I’ve been there, I’ve had a lemon crepe. Every. Time. So now, the word “Paris” conjures up the taste of lemon for me, and the taste of lemon conjures up the Eiffel Tower, because that’s where I…

Bump: Breakfast Burritos x 2
I’m bumping up this post from last year (almost exactly a year ago, actually) because I’m down in the San Francisco area all week visiting my friend, Sherri, whose recipe I shared with you back then (it’s the second recipe). I always love staying with Sherri. Her condo is one of the most peaceful places on earth. Plus, that girl really knows her way around a burrito. So a friend texted me a few weeks ago with a question. “Where in Marysville can I get a good breakfast burrito?” Jay asked. Sweet, naive California-transplant … The only place in Marysville, Washington where you can just pull up and order a…

Dutch Babies
Look at that. See those tiny, frothy butter bubbles? Hot out of the oven. And the hardest part of this Dutch Babies recipe is pushing the “on” button on the blender … that’s always so exhausting. You just can’t go wrong with this recipe. It’s my go-to whenever we have overnight guests, or we’re in the mood for pancakes but I’m NOT in the mood to stand over the stove for 45 mindless minutes. It really is a pancake, you know. Some people call them Puff Pancakes, which is okay, but not as mysterious sounding as Dutch Babies. I think people run a little faster to the table when they…

Biscuits and Gravy
This year, I gave my family a choice: do you want our usual (biscuits and gravy) for Christmas morning, or do you want a breakfast casserole? My daughter-in-law, Brittney, jumped in before anyone else could vote. "Biscuits and gravy ... hands down." She's a girl after my own heart. Nothing against breakfast casserole ... I mean, how can you speak against bread and eggs and cheese and sausage? But there's just something about biscuits and gravy. Maybe it's the biscuits. Or maybe it's the gravy ...

Ode to Granola
You start with a giant bowl of oats. I don’t mean “quick cook” oats, either. They have their place in the kitchen, but in a recipe like granola, quick oats pose no challenge to teeth; they offer no satisfaction. Regular oats. Giant bowl. In a just-big-enough pan, you then heat together a bit of oil and honey. The oil, in my opinion, should be olive, because it’s so good for you, but you can use whatever you hand on hand. And as long as I’m being bossy, I suggest you go out and get yourself a bee hive and do the honey right. But if you can’t do that ……
