Cabbage Patch Soup and a Shelf-Stable Soup Kit
Many years ago, I shared the recipe for our favorite soup — Cabbage Patch. Yes, it’s a humble, unassuming name. But it’s addicting, and the soup that almost single-handedly gets us through the winter every year. As I say in the video, Dave has informed me that he could eat this every day for the rest of his life. Me? I need some biscuits and gravy in the mix … and pesto. And chicken pot pie. But I’m glad he loves it so much. 🙂 Here’s the link to the original recipe, in which I used hamburger from one of my “batch cooking” sessions: Cabbage Patch Soup But in the…

Black forest ham and Apple paninis
Many years back, I was a contributing writer to The Journal, a monthly newspaper serving King and Snohomish counties. One of my assignments was to write an article offering “alternatives to apple pie” for anyone facing an abundance of apples. As our trees yielded buckets and buckets of apples that year, it was a fun topic to explore and experiment with. For that article, which I called “When Life Gives You Apples,” I included recipes for Black Forest Ham and Apple Paninis, Spiced Autumn Soup, and Apple and Cinnamon Bread Pudding. Of those, the one we made at home the most was Black Forest Ham and Apple Paninis. When i…

Jalapeño Popper Soup (Keto)
This is a Dave-approved soup. That’s all you need to know. I frequently get a “That’s tasty,” or a “Mmm. Good.” But when he says, “Man, oh man, that’s good soup,” I know it’s going in the rotation. I’ve been planning to make this for a long time. I’ve had the rcecipe scribbled on a post-it sitting up near my cookbooks forever. But it was our BLIZZARD (yes, we’re having a blizzard) that made me pull the post-it from its perch and start frying bacon. This recipe is all over the internet; I just added a bit more of this or that, and a few non-negtiables, like onion and garlic.…

All-Day French Onion Soup
Does the title scare you? I had to be truthful. In the spirit of full disclosure, you need to know that this is a recipe best made on those days when your car has been stolen, or you have a flat tire, or a tree has fallen across the driveway. You know. Those "I'm stuck at home all day so I should probably make the best of it" days. Because you're going to need it. But, oh ... the result! Delicious.

Split Pea Soup (Bump)
This originally posted in 2011, but a new friend made it and told me so on our Twig and Feather Facebook page. So now I have to make a batch myself. Oh, the power of suggestion … I’ve been absent all week … too sick to even get online. That’s pretty sick, huh? My first doctor said it was pneumonia and my second said it was bronchitis. Whatever. All I know is that it’s been a long week of sitting around in my jammies memorizing the line-up on PBS’s “Create” channel. I like to refer to it as “the poor woman’s Food Network.” We live way too far in the…

My New Favorite Sandwich: Cuban Sliders
This was this afternoon’s football fare. Yes. I know they’re ugly and messy. Layer slider bottoms all over your pan (if you feel squarish, you may use a square pan. I don’t want to mislead you. These were fabulous in large part to the homemade garlic-pepper-dill pickles you see below. But if you didn’t have the foresight to can your own pickles in preparation for this recipe, I don’t think anyone will complain if you use another type of pickle. But come next August, let’s talk about canning your own. Plop the tops over all. Pour the buttery concoction over the top. Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes @…
