Psalm 27:1-6
Proverbs 6:20-26
“If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26).
Long before someone thought to mix up ethyl alcohol, water and fragrance and present it to the world as “hand sanitizer,” God wrote the book on hygiene. And it was specific. If you’d like a refresher on just how specific God was about that, read Leviticus 15. Suffice it to say, He left no doubt about what you were to do in the event of a “discharge.”
The Jews followed God’s instructions to a T. And because of their obedience to God’s laws, the death rate among Jews during the Black Plague in the 14th century was much less than among the general population of Europe. Should we be surprised that God knew about bacteria before we did? The Jews washed more, touched the dead less (and washed when they did) and buried those dead sooner than their neighbors. And they survived at a greater rate.
It’s just one more example of how blessings are right there within our reach, if we would only obey. God reserves the right to bless us any time He wants, for any reason … but more often than not, blessing follows obedience.
