Those Boots — and the Crab Fisherman Who Wore Them Home

Updated 3/6/20: My son left for the Bering Sea one day after the Scandies Rose sank last New Year’s Eve. I begged him not to go, knowing full well he would go anyway. I’m praying hard that God holds Zac in His hand, and that I get a repeat of this experience again soon. In the past, I’ve made a great big deal about the carpet, and what I permit to step upon it. But hear me out. Shoes bring germs. Am I right? If those shoes have walked the concrete of a city — and I’m thinking New York City here — they’ve stepped over spilled mustard, discarded gum,…

    Chalkboards … Everywhere!

I'm in absolute chalkboard heaven. About a month ago, I stumbled upon Martha Stewart's recipe for custom chalkboard paint. I'd seen black and green chalkboard spray paint at the craft store, but chalkboard paint in any color of the rainbow? O, could it be true? Martha generally tells the truth, except for those instances when she's trying to convince us that gold leaf-brushed cookies are edible and delicious. Pecan Tassies

A long time ago -- long before I'd begun acquiring my people -- I acquired this fancy little gadget, which my friend ordered from a man in Philadelphia who was handy at carving fancy little gadgets. I think she ordered one for me so I would stop badgering her into baking me batches and batches of my at-the-time most favorite dessert: Pecan Tassies. Lois looked relieved when she shoved her gift across the table toward me. "And here's the recipe," she added. Despite the period at the end of her sentence, I couldn't help but hear the unspoken, "Now, quit bugging me." We're still friends. But I've had to make…

    Biscuits and Gravy

This year, I gave my family a choice: do you want our usual (biscuits and gravy) for Christmas morning, or do you want a breakfast casserole? My daughter-in-law, Brittney, jumped in before anyone else could vote. "Biscuits and gravy ... hands down." She's a girl after my own heart. Nothing against breakfast casserole ... I mean, how can you speak against bread and eggs and cheese and sausage? But there's just something about biscuits and gravy. Maybe it's the biscuits. Or maybe it's the gravy ...

    Christmas Fun

Merry Christmas, everyone! Did you love today? We have had the perfect Christmas. I love when Christmas morning lands on a Sunday. I kind of think there’s nothing more appropriate than starting the celebration with a church service. What better way to set your focus where it belongs? I was so happy to see so many people at church this morning. I think Jonas Aley said it best: “It’s so cool that we get to go to church on Christmas morning!” That blessed me, Jonas. I couldn’t agree more. This week is always so busy. I planned on blogging a bunch, but it had to wait until this afternoon. I…
