I debated and debated over whether to call this Corn Chowder or Frugal Soup. If it wasn't for the fact that our family has been calling it Corn Chowder forever, I might have changed it, because this batch turned into a big pot of "Use Whatever You Find in the Fridge and Freezer." I like when that happens. It all started a few weeks ago when I was experimenting with a Sticky Chicken recipe. I might post that when I work the kinks out. For now, it's not sticky enough. But we ate the chicken ... continue reading...

How I Learned that Passionate Love is Real
In terms of pure romance, no open-shirted, smooth-chested, flowing-haired, pony-riding hero ever held a candle to my grandfather. Though I read and enjoyed all the best fairy tales as a child and spent my fair share of Saturday afternoons sitting through Disney movies, my romantic notions were birthed, formed and cemented at home, watching the way my grandparents interacted. Clifford loved Mickey -- madly, deeply, jealously. Maybe that's because he found her later in his life (she was forty, he ... continue reading...
Welcome Back Cookies
I'll be honest ... these are the M & Ms left over after I removed all the green ones to make St. Patrick's Day cookies. Sure, most people would simply toss the rest of the bag once it had been ruined like that. But I thought, Why add another pile of chocolate to an already teetering landfill? So I took pity on those remaining blue, pink, purple and yellow M & Ms and made a second batch as a sort of "welcome back!" to spring. That's just how green I am. Shannon's "Together We Can Save ... continue reading...
Always Perfect Dinner Rolls
I like these rolls for a few reasons: one, they're always perfect. (Hey, let's put that in the title!) Two, they're easy to make, and the results are delicious. And three, they come with a fond memory -- that of my friend, Robin, standing in my kitchen some twenty years ago and showing me how she forms her own dinner rolls. "You just take a hunk about this big, round it out, smash it on your left thumb, and then squish it up between this little circle in your right hand ..." I think all the ... continue reading...
My Favorite Fruit Salad
It's a Groupon coupon day! We probably wouldn't have chosen to drive to Ballard today and have a second lunch at The Counter, but when I bought the first coupon way back in ... what was it, November? ... I actually bought two. And that second one expires tomorrow. So rather than let it go to waste, we're off to Ballard. Last time, I got a make-up-your-own burger. This time, I think I'll do the burger-in-a-bowl. Either way, though, I'll be eating lighter later. So I thought I'd mix up my ... continue reading...
Pieces
My proper but mischievous grandmother had one firm rule about cussing: If you must do it, do it in the barn. I believe now that her unspoken message was "animal behavior belongs with the animals," but we didn't hear that subtext back then. We just thought it a tantalizing and dangerous invitation. Of us seven girls, I only remember one who regularly took Grandma up on that offer. "Dang it," the girl-whose-name-I'm-not- telling-you would whisper, when she just couldn't take the pressure of ... continue reading...
