Gage follows me into the bathroom and watches while I put the brush back where it belongs. As we turn to leave, he settles his gaze on the drawer where I keep the bandaids -- the boring ones, and the ones I've collected just for him. I can see his thoughts. "Grandma," he begins, "I hurt my nose." "You did? When did that happen?" "Just now." I pull the drawer open to reveal the bounty within. "Would a bandaid help?" He nods. I pull out a small, nose-sized Batman bandaid. "How about this ... continue reading...

Home Again
A post from several years back, when I had just returned from a quick trip to California. But it could have been describing just about any trip. I'm home from a quick trip to San Jose to speak at a Christmas luncheon for "Mothers Together," a ministry of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. This was my second visit, and both times, I've been showered with kindness and welcomed like a friend. That's a beautiful bunch of ladies they've got there. I hope to visit again. This is a picture of the ... continue reading...
Gone Fishin’
Apparently, all Oklahomans fish. It's not optional. Even new, gangly-legged transplants are expected to pole-up and do their part. Shortly after our move from my home state to his, my new step-father decided the seven year-old me needed an introduction. So he took our family to his favorite cabin up in the hills near a river guaranteed to yield fish. I wasn't a big fan of fish, unless it came battered, greasy, and sitting next to equally bad-for-you fries in a little paper bowl, but he didn't ... continue reading...
Casting Crowns
A few weeks ago, when Dave was getting ready to take a run to the dump, we tackled a pile of boxes which had been stored in a covered area along with our hay. Spying one dilapidated box, I told Dave, "I think those are the last of Cindy's things." A woman from church and her two children had lived in our travel trailer a few years ago, and she'd left a couple of boxes full of things she no longer wanted. The shoes on the top of that box were hers -- so I almost suggested that Dave just toss the ... continue reading...
Mother’s Day … From the Viewpoint of an Infertile Woman
I wrote this article several years back when I was writing and editing for Pastors.com. It describes the feelings I wish I had shared with my pastor back when I was the woman crying in the pew. Now that my husband is the pastor, we handle Mother's Day differently. We don't single out those who have been blessed with children of their own. Instead, we celebrate all the women in our church -- all the sisters, the aunts, the Sunday school teachers, and yes, the moms. We acknowledge the gentleness, ... continue reading...
One Year Bible: February 14
"He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see" (Matthew 28:6). To read today's portion of scripture, you can purchase The One Year Bible (paid link) or find the following in your Bible: Exodus 37:1-38:31 Matthew 28:1-20 Psalm 34:11-22 Proverbs 9:9-10 Two sites claim to be the burial site of Jesus. The one we didn't see on any of our three trips to Israel is the source of much conflict. Six or seven churches have established shrines there and each will tell you, vehemently, ... continue reading...
