Update: I've added a video for this on my YouTube Channel with two very small additions at the end: a tiny bit of lemon juice, and a little bigger bit of butter (say THAT five times :). If you'd like to see the process in action, this is for you: A repost from last Thanksgiving ... because you really need to try it. And it's not too late. :) If there's one thing that can really put a damper on your Thanksgiving dinner, it's when your 20-lb turkey yields only 2 cups of drippings, and you ... continue reading...

Hold Me
Gage is a toddler on the run. Spying the cat, he wriggles a "Let me go, Grandma" message, and I do. I set him down, knowing he'll be back. He races in that precious, Lurch-like fashion of his toward Felix, who is stretched to capacity near the wood stove, and ignorant of his impending tail-tug. Gage is quick, but Felix is faster. He abandons the hearth to save himself, and hides just out of of chubby-finger-reach under the love seat. Grandma, Gage's eyes say to me, kitty gone. Get ... continue reading...
Germany-Part 7
Here's how we left Germany ... The only sound at 7:30 a.m. on that Saturday morning was the rumble of our Rick Steves' suitcases as they covered the concrete distance between the Bible college and the Eiserfeld train station across the street. All of Siegen slept while we said good-bye. Past the silent front-facing depot, past the graffiti that graced the tunnel, down the steps and up the steps, all that could be heard was those wheels. The doubts settled in right about the time we rounded ... continue reading...
Germany-Part 5
(Blogger won't take my pictures today ... but I'll keep trying) a I will take you to Buchenwald, I really will. And a walk through the Ann Frank House in downtown Amsterdam. But those tellings will only come when I push aside the happy-of-heart condition I'm in. You can't type those words while feeling light and satisfied. You have to go deep and lonely to find those words ... and I'm not ready. Yesterday was too lovely a day to set aside for long. I'll write about that first. You know ... continue reading...
Germany-Part 2
Today I've got a handful of interesting facts to share with you. Mind you, I've learned all of this while on a simple quest to buy the ingredients to make cookies. Our apartment has a full-but-tiny kitchen, and I thought I'd make a few dozen cookies to send with Dave for his class. My first thought was chocolate chip cookies. But I learned that you can't buy chocolate chips in Germany. What? you say. Isn't this the land of chocolate? I think that's the point. I think they've so perfected ... continue reading...
Tails
I wish this story involved two cats because I'd love an excuse to title this, "A Tail of Two Kitties," but it's not to be. There's only one kitty involved in this little tale. Character two is a goat. Now that I think of it, if both were goats, this could be "A Tail of Two Kiddies." Still, the characters are what they are ... so we'll settle for "Tails." Still with me? As I type this post, the kitten in question is in her favorite spot. I can't see her unless I move my laptop to one side ... continue reading...
