Eight speckled bananas pretty much demanded that I deal with them over the weekend. I almost made my usual Better-Than-Banana Bread, but I had just been looking through my bulging purple file of old favorites and found one I used to make a long time ago. So I made two batches (four loaf pans total) of the old recipe and gave two away, just because it’s a sad situation when you and your husband can go through a loaf in an hour. Let’s get that temptation out of the house. This recipe doesn’t ... continue reading...

Better Than Banana Bread
They say that necessity is the mother of invention. (As a side note ... do any of us know who "they" are?) Anyway, in this case, "they" were right. I wanted to make banana bread for church last night, but had more bananas than it takes for one batch, and less than it takes for two. And I really wanted to bring two. So I twiddled a little with my usual banana bread recipe and came up with something that I think is much better than plain old banana bread. My little plan backfired, however. Banana Bread and Roses
Nice combo, don't you think? Banana bread and roses ... really, twelve of the most beautiful roses I've seen in forever. Tera brought them home from school. They were presented to her at an assembly when she was brought forward and introduced as the junior track captain for this year. The way she earned that position is a great story. She had to run a mile in under 6.20 minutes, and she had gotten close a couple of times, but couldn't seem to get under 6.21. But one cold, rainy day last month ... continue reading...

Because I live just 29 miles from Kirkland, WA, or what the LA Times affectionately calls, ”the U.S. epicenter of COVID-19,” I hear daily speculations about the possibility — and some are saying probability — of a mandated quarantine in the very near future. So what would that look like? How long would it last? And ... continue reading...
The (Hobby) Farm in July
Here's a snapshot of July from a few years ago ... "Well, life on the farm is kinda laid baaaaack!" Really? Let's see now. How has my week gone ... Two of our goats, Bambi and Jimmy, had a touch of something or other. Dave gave them a wormer and I gave them two doses of penicillin. It occurs to me now that I'm the family injector. Dave doesn't say, "I need to give the goats (insert: cat, dog ... hamster) a shot." He says, "We need to give the goats a shot," and then he waits for me to ... continue reading...
10 Utterly Delicious Things to Make With Oatmeal
So you stocked up on all your pantry essentials, and just for good measure you went ahead and bought the BIG bag of oats -- the 20 pounder. (Or maybe you were a little more conservative and just bought four pounds worth.) And you're proud of yourself for being so prepared. You're all, "Bring on winter!" (or a quarantine!) because you are prepared! But ... you can only eat so many bowls of the usual stuff ... oats, milk, maybe a little brown sugar. Sure, you can mix it up a bit and put the brown ... continue reading...
