I have never met a lemon I didn't like. When I was in my early teens, I came up with my first food-related invention: lemony V8 juice. It was a pretty simple recipe: one part lemon juice to three parts V8, topped with a big sprinkling of pepper. That's a lot of lemon juice, when you think about it. But it was only the beginning. I soon figured out how to make lemon bars, lemon-blueberry bread, lemon meringue, and Shaker lemon pie. That was followed by lemon curd, lemonade made with actual ... continue reading...

Snickerdoodle Meets Bundt
Anyone in the mood for a nice, warm snail dumpling? No? Me neither. But if you call it a snickerdoodle, I might change my mind. According to Wikipedia (and you KNOW it's true if an anonymous person took the time to post it there, right?), here's the back story to the delectable snickerdoodle: "The Joy of Cooking claims that snickerdoodles are probably German in origin, and that the name is a corruption of the German word for "snail dumpling" (Schneckennudeln, or cinnamon-dusted sweet rolls). ... continue reading...
How to Survive a Quarantine Without Losing Your Mind

Because I live just 29 miles from Kirkland, WA, or what the LA Times affectionately calls, ”the U.S. epicenter of COVID-19,” I hear daily speculations about the possibility — and some are saying probability — of a mandated quarantine in the very near future. So what would that look like? How long would it last? And ... continue reading...
Easy Crock Pot Applesauce
I woke up this morning to the most wonderful sight: RAIN! Oh, how I have missed the rain. I know, I know. Everyone else is delighted with summer. And I can take a little summer. But when it's been as hot (and sometimes humid) as we've had lately, then I start longing for good old Pacific Northwest rain. And today it came. :) All that fresh, rain-scrubbed air gave me a cooking- and cleaning-boost. By mid-afternoon, I'd made a crock pot full of applesauce, made a bundt pan and a loaf pan of ... continue reading...
A Cake For Spring
I made this cake a few days ago, just for the sake of emptying my cupboard of one cake mix and three packages of instant pistachio pudding mix. But as these things have a habit of doing, my cake took on a life of its own. First, my daughter-in-law spied the makings on the counter. "Whatcha making?" "I'm not sure yet ... it's an experiment." "For what?" "I thought I'd make some sort of cake and take it to the church potluck tomorrow." Brittney's face fell, and I could see in her eyes that ... continue reading...
Kids at the Wheel
Off to the store to get ingredients for the Snickerdoodle Bundt I want to bring to church tonight. Pictures to follow ... but here's a post from another shopping trip a few years ago ... I pop into Haggen's to do a little shopping, but before I start checking off my list and marching the aisles like I mean it, I stop by the Chinese food counter and order a small container of honey-glazed chicken. If you've never had Haggen's honey-glazed chicken, you probably shouldn't be giving me those ... continue reading...
