A bunch of years ago, I started thinking how nice it would be if the women at church got together on a regular basis to talk about all things "nest-y" : how to set an atmosphere in your home, how to can peaches, how to sew a button, how to organize your cupboards ... that sort of thing. What really got me started on this path was when I realized how many younger women in our church had never had any training at all in this department. Some of them had mothers who worked, some had mothers who ... continue reading...

A Few of the Reasons I’m Missing Haiti Today
Our church is getting ready to send another team to Haiti, and this time, I'm not on it. And I'm grieving over that. I think it's just now hitting me that when they step off on that foreign tarmac, and feel the heat equivalent of fifty hair dryers trained on their expectant, wide-eyed faces, I'll be here in Washington, doing some unknown, un-Haiti-like something, and missing out on the beauty that is Jacmel. Why do we pick at our owies? I couldn't help but look through my pictures of our last ... continue reading...
“Let’s See What We Have” Soup
I'm a pretty gigantic fan of "poking around." Do you know how many spectacular things have happened in the name of "poking around?" No? Well, when you have an exact number, please come back and tell me. :D All I know is that a bunch of our favorite meals have occurred in the name of "poking around." This was such a case. During our recent cold snap here in the Northwest ... otherwise known as June ... I got a hankering for soup. But the soup I planned to make required a bunch of ingredients ... continue reading...
Restored
I am back among the land of the breathing. This morning, I opened my eyes and realized two things: one, I had slept through the night without a single coughing fit, and two, I could smell the rain-washed air drifting through our bedroom window. No more congestion, no more sore throat, no more rattling cough. It's funny how just three or four days of discomfort can make you appreciate normalcy. I ran through the house sniffing that lovely smell and even went outside for a long moment, just ... continue reading...
Easy Iced Coffee Drinks
Two trips to Paris in four months ... can you say, "spoiled rotten?" I am. I know it full well. And yep, I'm headed to Paris in the morning. But this time, I won't need an interpreter when I teach. That's because this time, I'm heading to the other Paris ... the one in Texas. :D I'm very excited to see my fiends -- the mother/daughter duo of Pat Apple and Christy Duff. Pat is the pastor's wife from Calvary Chapel Tel Aviv, just here for a quick visit before she heads back to Israel. I can't ... continue reading...
The Last Time
When I walked into the kitchen this morning and saw that straw sticking out of a too-short cup, my first thought was, That is absolutely the last time I buy straws. They irritate me. I don't know why. I suppose I could trace it back to those curly, loop-de-loop straws I bought way back when the kids were younger. I wanted them to like the straws, but not so much that they'd actually use them. Because if they used them, say, for milk, then I'd have to be diligent about cleaning them. You can't ... continue reading...
