I kind of think you should approach an onion the way you would a skunk, should you decide you need to pet one: get in, and get out ... because the longer you linger, the worse the experience is going to get. Maybe in another post I'll tell you how to pet a skunk ... Now, you might be thinking, "I've been cutting onions all my life. Who does she think she is?" or something not quite so nice. But this really and truly is the best way to cut an onion. That's because until you learn to do this, ... continue reading...

Stormy Day Cooking: Crock Pot (or not) Beef Stew
I was almost ready to finish up this post yesterday and hit "publish" when I got the information about the Welcome Home Blankets. So this one sat waiting. The storm is over; no trees lost; no power outage. But there's always next time! :) Wow. It is stor-or-ormy out there! The evergreens that surround our house (and I mean surround ... as if they were swat-trees with a bullhorn, trying to talk me into releasing some hostages) look like they're in the middle of an intense zumba class -- ... continue reading...
Welcome Home Blankets
I just got word of a great ministry opportunity ... but it's coming up quickly. We've been offered a chance to make blankets for all the babies that were born during the deployment of three ships from Naval Station Everett. The sailors are coming home at the end of the month, and we'll be giving blankets to the families with new babies at the Welcome Home ceremony. If you sew, knit or crochet -- and would like to help -- we need 45" x 45" baby blankets. They can be quilted, crocheted, knitted, ... continue reading...
Those Potluck Boston Baked Beans
On the first Sunday of every month, right after our church's second service, the men storm upstairs and spring into action. While the women chat and laugh and make a leisurely climb up from the sanctuary, those men start tossing chairs and tables all around the room, and right before your eyes, they transform the overflow area into a fellowship spot -- just in time for our monthly, first-Sunday potluck. It's really a sight to see. If instead of men they were, say, mice, you'd think you were ... continue reading...
Pumpkin Chocolate-Chip Muffins
I would like to introduce you to the world's easiest muffins, and perhaps the moistest. And on top of all that, they're WW-friendly. And right after I share this recipe with you, I'm going to dismantle it and try to make it healthier. That's because it's ... uh ... oh, I really hate to admit this ... made from a cake mix. There. I said it. My head is down, I'm filled with shame, and weeping ever-so-softly, but confession is the first step toward repentance. I really believe I can ditch the box ... continue reading...
Breathe
The house is cold, and I'm the first one up. But I know what to do. Dave sat me down in front of our first woodstove, twenty-three years ago, and showed me how to arrange the logs and start a blaze. Then when we built this new house and I begged him to release me from wood chips and smoky burps and trails of sawdust, he relented ... and showed me how to flip the switch on our new fake stove. When the price of propane chased my finger from that "on" switch and made me miss the mess and ... continue reading...
