It’s heeeeerrrrreeee! I’ve been waiting all day for the blizzard that just made its appearance. And according to my friend, Cathy, our storm tonight has the potential for “thunder snow,” whatever that means. I think it means we might have thunder … and snow. Pretty good deduction, huh? 🙂
When it snows like this, you just have to make cocoa. And I don’t mean the kind made in a factory and stuck in a foily packet. This is the real stuff. And once you try it, and see how easy it is, you’ll scoff at the other kind.
I actually have several really good recipes for cocoa. So here’s the the first installment:
Snowy Day Cocoa #1
1/3 c sugar
2 squares unsweetened chocolate*
dash salt
4 c milk
1 TBSP butter
1 tsp vanilla
8 large marshmallows
In a large saucepan, combine sugar, chocolate, salt, milk and butter; bring to a boil.
Add vanilla and marshmallows. Heat until marshmallows melt.
Divide between 4 mugs. If you want, add more marshmallows or a nice swirly dab of whipped cream.
I suggest you drink this sitting by the window. 🙂
*Note: If you don’t have unsweetened chocolate squares, you can substitute 1-2 TBSP unsweetened cocoa and 1/4 c hot water.

I already anticipate my two little girls waking to the snow and asking for hot cocoa tomorrow morning. And you know what? I don’t think they even know there is an “instant” kind! As far as they are concerned, cocoa can only be made on the stove.
I don’t think my recipe includes butter or marshmallows (otherwise it is extremely similar). We might just have to try this recipe out tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!
