I made this cake a few days ago, just for the sake of emptying my cupboard of one cake mix and three packages of instant pistachio pudding mix. But as these things have a habit of doing, my cake took on a life of its own. First, my daughter-in-law spied the makings on the counter. "Whatcha making?" "I'm not sure yet ... it's an experiment." "For what?" "I thought I'd make some sort of cake and take it to the church potluck tomorrow." Brittney's face fell, and I could see in her eyes that ... continue reading...

Rescue Me
I saw the first of these signs in Scotland, I believe, in an area where there was a lot of road construction going on. Apparently, if you find yourself stranded within these random pockets of rescue, all you have to do is wait and someone will come along to "recover you." It struck me then, and I couldn't shake the thought. So when the same signs began popping up on the road somewhere between York and London, I had to take a picture. "Free recovery ... Await rescue." Has ever the gospel been ... continue reading...
Chalkboards … Everywhere!
I'm in absolute chalkboard heaven. About a month ago, I stumbled upon Martha Stewart's recipe for custom chalkboard paint. I'd seen black and green chalkboard spray paint at the craft store, but chalkboard paint in any color of the rainbow? O, could it be true?! Martha generally tells the truth, except for when she's trying to convince us that gold leaf-brushed cookies are both edible and delicious. Anyway, I wanted it to be true, so I scribbled a quick list, flew to Home Depot and Michael's, ... continue reading...
An Absence the Size of You
"How could I ever prepare for an absence the size of you?" ~ poet unknown Some losses are, to borrow a phrase from my grandfather, "no bigger than a minute." These small absences are insignificant in the scheme of things, and easy to measure. You work your tongue up into the gap in your mouth and probe the space your tooth once occupied. You plunge your hand into the pocket where your wallet should be. In those "no bigger than a minute" cases, the loss is really no larger than the space it ... continue reading...
Simple Shrimp Salad
This salad is hands-down my new favorite recipe. Actually, it's not so much a recipe as a "throwing together of ingredients." Which is, well ... a recipe. Either way, this is low-carb (I'm finally following my doctor's orders), fast and delicious. Since I'm eating a lot of protein these days, and not a lot of carbs, I've got a stash of hard-boiled eggs in the fridge at all times. That's part of what makes this a fast dish. So if you don't have the eggs already prepared, figure in time for ... continue reading...
New York Cheesecake with Mixed Berry Topping
They say that only two things are certain in this life: death and taxes. In my world, there are two more certainties: Dave would like tacos for dinner, and Dave would like cheesecake for dessert. Any day, any occasion, any time. I almost don't bother adding anything else to the options. Why offer Beef Wellington when he'd rather eat tacos? And what good would it do for me to add eclairs to the dessert line-up, or chocolate cream pie, or creme brulee? As long as "cheesecake" is in the same ... continue reading...
