Well ... what follows is the post I started on Thursday morning, just a few hours before a ridiculous flu bug hit our house. I got it first, followed by Dave, and now Tera has it. Not sure if any of the three of us will make tonight's New Year's Eve party, but I have my fingers crossed. If we DO go, this is still what I'm bringing :) Happy almost New Year! I know I'm a few days early, but I'm in planning-mode, so that's what's on my mind. This Saturday we're having our usual New Year's Family ... continue reading...

Family
Katie is six. Her hair is white-blonde, and she's missing four front teeth. I barely know the child; after all, I've only been in the house three minutes, and this is only the second time I've seen my cousin's daughter. But I know already that I'm about to be delighted. "Let me show you my Christmas gifts," Katie says. "First, I got this great Snoopy shirt," she says, holding out the hem of her dog-adorned shirt to help me get a better look. "And this Dora-the-Explorer doll ... and this ... continue reading...
Biscuits and Gravy
This year, I gave my family a choice: do you want our usual (biscuits and gravy) for Christmas morning, or do you want a breakfast casserole? My daughter-in-law, Brittney, jumped in before anyone else could vote. "Biscuits and gravy ... hands down." She's a girl after my own heart. Nothing against breakfast casserole ... I mean, how can you speak against bread and eggs and cheese and sausage? But there's just something about biscuits and gravy. Maybe it's the biscuits. Or maybe it's the ... continue reading...
Christmas Fun
Merry Christmas, everyone! Did you love today? We have had the perfect Christmas. I love when Christmas morning lands on a Sunday. I kind of think there's nothing more appropriate than starting the celebration with a church service. What better way to set your focus where it belongs? I was so happy to see so many people at church this morning. I think Jonas Aley said it best: "It's so cool that we get to go to church on Christmas morning!" That blessed me, Jonas. I couldn't agree more. This ... continue reading...
Making Room
I wrote this article for HomeLife magazine ten or twelve years ago. We still have this jar of straw, and every time I see it, I'm reminded of the truth I learned on that long-ago Christmas. I remember -- distinctly -- how overwhelmed I felt the first time someone suggested an Advent celebration to me. Four nights. I’d have to set aside four nights during the busiest four weeks of the year. Lighting the candles sounded nice. I liked candles. Prayer was fine. I liked prayer. Sitting around a ... continue reading...
Rascal
Larry's been at it again. I don't know if it's because he misses his pal, Jake, or because he misses the mistress of Jake's house, but he's taken to high-tailing it back up to the neighbors' house every chance he gets. Forget the shock collar around his neck. He's decided it's worth the zing to gain his freedom. He doesn't stay long. That's because when we notice his absence, one of us will drive 1/4 mile up the hill and pause at the neighbors' driveway. When I'm the dog-fetcher, I bring the ... continue reading...
