A few of you asked me for the recipe for Cheesy Bread (as pictured with Turkey Chowder). Not only is this really quick and simple, it's also a huge hit. There's never a piece left when I make this. My son could probably eat the entire thing himself, if the rest of us didn't elbow him away from the plate. All you need is: one loaf French or Italian bread 2-3 cups cheese (I use a mix of cheddar and Parmesan) mayo garlic powder, salt and pepper Just mix the cheese(s) with enough mayo to hold ... continue reading...

Turkey Chowder
Turkey chowder and cheesy bread ... I would almost go to the trouble of cooking a turkey just to have that leftover carcass to make this. It's that good. Very quick directions today, because I'm feeding 15 people in a few hours (right after we all tromp through the woods in search of The Great Christmas Tree). My chowder is already in the crock pot ... oh, how I love that feeling! Okay. If you want to make this EXACTLY the way I did, here's what you do: Put every last turkey bone--plus all ... continue reading...
Crock Pot Stuffing
You know how your oven is always STUFFED on Thanksgiving? The turkey takes up most of the space, but then there's stuffing, a tray of rolls, green bean casserole ... candied yams, for those of you who believe in making dessert out of a vegetable ... haha :) Can you tell I'm not a fan of sugared-up yams? Butter. Just give me butter. Anyway, I have a solution for you. Move your stuffing to the crock pot. Not only will it NOT suffer, I actually think it tastes considerably better when it's been ... continue reading...
Oh, The Weather Outside is … Delightful!
We're snowed in. Really and truly. We don't have feet and feet of snow, but we have plenty enough that we can't make it up our driveway. So today, I decided very spontaneously to make our Thanksgiving dinner. I had every last thing thawed and ready to go, but just hadn't quite planned on which day I'd put it all together. We're heading to Dave's parents' house for the real dinner on Thursday (if we can get out, that is), so ours was extra. And today was the perfect day to make it. My son is ... continue reading...
Chicken Marsala and Browned-Butter/Myzithra Pasta
I've had a hankering for BOTH chicken marsala and Browned-Butter/Myzithra Pasta ... you know, the kind you get at Spaghetti Factory. I'm not sure it's possible not to like pasta with butter on it, browned or not. But there's something wonderful about browned butter. It takes on a nutty deliciousness you can't get any other way. Today was the day. I made a batch of porcini powder this morning (see previous post), so I was good to go. First, I flattened three chicken breasts using the flat ... continue reading...
Frugal Mama: Porcini Powder
I've been wanting to buy a bottle of porcini powder for awhile now, but the only place where I was positive I'd find it was Whole Foods, and the nearest one to me is about 45 minutes away. So I kept waiting. Until it dawned on me that I might be able to make my own. A little googling confirmed that the only ingredient in porcini powder is dried porcini mushrooms. No sense in paying $36 a lb for someone else to grind up those porcinis for me! I picked up a package of dried porcinis Saturday ... continue reading...
