We run through the obligatory script, the way you do every time you approach a checker at the grocery store. "How ya doing?" she asks. "Fine. How are you today?" "I'm good." I assume it will end there; if often does. I'm tired from my workout at the Y and she seems tired of her task. Usually, when two tired people face each other over a conveyor belt of groceries, they both absorb themselves in making sure the food gets in the bag. But I tilt my wallet the wrong way and send change ... continue reading...

Stick ’em Up
No more pulling my hair out looking for bobby pins! I can't remember where I saw this tip (I'm thinking it was on the Better Homes and Gardens site, but don't quote me on that), but it's been in the back of my mind for about a month, just simmering ... just waiting for that moment when I'd be wandering the aisles at Michael's and I'd find the magnetic strip I needed. That moment came a few days ago. I was actually there to buy Fimo or Sculpty so I could make my own buttons (have you SEEN the ... continue reading...
Germany-Part 3
I thought I'd make brownies for Dave, but it meant getting a little creative. I couldn't find unsweetened baking cocoa at Edeka, but I knew that with a little finagling, I could reduce the butter and substitute for unsweetened baking chocolate. But I really had no way of knowing which--if any--of the bars of chocolate I found in the baking aisle were unsweetened. So I bought the darkest looking one ... the one with a word that looked suspiciously like "bitter." But when I walked home (through an ... continue reading...
Gyoza Sauce
Finally! I've been grieving the Gyoza sauce we used to get with our Chinese food from the Safeway counter. Do you know the sauce I'm talking about? I think I'm the only one who ever called it by its proper name. Gyoza sauce. That was always met by a blank stare from the food scooper behind the counter. "What?" they'd ask after an uncomfortable silence. "Potsticker Sauce," I'd say. I always wanted to add, "It's right there ... on the package. Read it." Of course, "Potsticker Sauce" was also ... continue reading...
Mid-Air Love
I've been staying with friends this week while Dave in southern California. I'll get back to my kitchen and my camera this afternoon. For now, here's a post from several years ago. I've told you before about Luke. He's my two and a half-year old playmate, my fellow ruffian and cuddler all rolled into a sweaty, mischievous pile of boy. He also happens to be Madison's youngest brother. Our game of "Catch me; catch what I throw at you; come and find me" has been ongoing for two months now. Of ... continue reading...
Wedding Bells
I'm off to a wedding today. More to the point, I'm off to help shoot a wedding today. A very last minute, very unexpected opportunity came my way when my friend, Bobby Griffin, (who is the real photographer of this shindig) called last night and asked if I'd fill in for his second photographer. He said my day of assisting/apprenticing would involve crawling on the floor and climbing chairs, and trips to a local park and an underpass for some outdoor shots after the ceremony. Should be lots of ... continue reading...
