My guess is that you don't eat too many red beans. I say that because aside from my family, and people I have converted through force-feeding, I can't say I've met too many people whose eyes light up at the mention of "red beans." Sad, sad, sad. You don't know what you're missing. Red beans and cornbread are Southern comfort food at its best. I did live in the south as a young girl, but that's not where I learned to love red beans. Grandma's cooking did it. These beans were a staple at my ... continue reading...

Courage
On this Memorial Day, I just want to say thank you to our men and women in uniform. I've had a fresh glimpse of the sacrifices you make, and I'm both humbled and grateful. We don't tell you often enough how much you mean to us. His name was Lou, but everyone on our listserver called him LocoLou. And he was all right with that ... liked it, in fact. I never met him, never spoke with him by phone, never saw a picture. But I can see and hear Lou in my mind nonetheless. His voice is low and ... continue reading...
For Zac
Today, the child who made me a mother turns twenty-two. He's 6'1", wears size 12 shoes, is capable of dunking a basketball and growing whiskers ... and is now a father himself. I have no idea where the time went. Here's a memory from the moment I first saw him. Happy birthday, Zachary David. The most amazing moment for me, as a parent, was that first moment. Unlike most other mothers, I didn’t get my first glimpse of my son when he was all slippery and irritated. Because we were adoptive ... continue reading...
Wedding Bells
I'm off to a wedding today. More to the point, I'm off to help shoot a wedding today. A very last minute, very unexpected opportunity came my way when my friend, Bobby Griffin, (who is the real photographer of this shindig) called last night and asked if I'd fill in for his second photographer. He said my day of assisting/apprenticing would involve crawling on the floor and climbing chairs, and trips to a local park and an underpass for some outdoor shots after the ceremony. Should be lots of ... continue reading...
Hannah Overton Part 7: Emma
The final post in a series I wrote after meeting Hannah Overton's church and family. If you have not already done so, please consider writing a letter to the governor of Texas asking for clemency for Hannah. Details can be found on this Facebook page. Part 1: Staring at Walls Part 2: Quorum Part 3: Chains Part 4: Locusts Part 5: Pain and Loss Part 6: The Bride Emma wouldn't let me hold her, at first. She let me stare at her. She smiled for this picture. She even tolerated the touch ... continue reading...
Hannah Overton Part 6: The Bride
Part six of a seven-part series on my visit to Calvary Chapel of the Coastlands, Hannah Overton's home church. Part 1:Staring at Walls Part 2: Quorum Part 3: Chains Part 4: Locusts Part 5: Loss The body of Christ is a beautiful thing. I saw glimpses of that beauty in Texas -- testimonies that stood in sharp contrast to the dark injustice of Hannah's ordeal. From the beginning, Pastor Rod and Noreen Carver, along with several other couples, did the dance of court-ordered ... continue reading...
