Did you hear that big noise yesterday morning? That was the explosion in my kitchen. I don't know what got into me, but I went into a cooking/baking frenzy pretty much the moment my feet hit the floor. Let's not question it. Let's just eat the results. I had been wanting to experiment with this Pull-Apart bread for awhile now but couldn't get a whole morning to myself till yesterday. So the second I woke up, I started the dough. And then while standing there watching it rise, it occurred to me ... continue reading...

Restaurant Review: Gayle’s Bakery & Rosticceria ~ Capitola, CA
I'm home from my second trip to California this month -- this time to Oakland/Capitola. I love traveling, but I really miss my kitchen when I'm away. Usually by about Day 2 of my trip, I've already got a good list going of all the things I want to make when I get home. My list today includes Chicken Diavolo and Polenta Casserole (both of which I had -- and then had again -- at Gayle's Bakery in Capitola with my friend, Sherri Youngward. In fact, I'm pretty sure we set a record for most trips to ... continue reading...
French Roasted Chicken
Does everyone else love Trader Joe's as much as I do? The closest one to me is in Everett, which isn't far if you're a crow, but if you're just a woman with a car, and you're heading there from Marysville and having to fight all that hideous traffic, it can easily take a half an hour to get there. But I do it. TJ's is a worthy destination. If they ever put one in Marysville, I wouldn't have a reason to ever leave town again. I made the trek last week to pick up a few things for a luncheon I ... continue reading...
Crock Pot Stuffing
You know how your oven is always STUFFED on Thanksgiving? The turkey takes up most of the space, but then there's stuffing, a tray of rolls, green bean casserole ... candied yams, for those of you who believe in making dessert out of a vegetable ... haha :) Can you tell I'm not a fan of sugared-up yams? Butter. Just give me butter. Anyway, I have a solution for you. Move your stuffing to the crock pot. Not only will it NOT suffer, I actually think it tastes considerably better when it's been ... continue reading...
Make-Ahead Turkey Gravy
If there's one thing that can really put a damper on your Thanksgiving dinner, it's when your 20-lb turkey yields only 2 cups of drippings, and you all end up potato-rich and gravy-poor. One tiny gravy boat makes the rounds at the table, and everyone holds their breath, hoping there's still a molecule or two left by the time it gets to them. There's a very easy solution to that problem. Make your gravy ahead of time. It's a tiny bit of work, but it's absolutely worth it for peace of mind come ... continue reading...
Dehydrating Onions for Winter Storage
Update: The little dehydrator I used (and recommend below) for dehydrating onions served me for MANY years before I handed it down to my daughter-in-law and bought myself an Excalibur. And ... what a difference. I absolutely love it. In fact, I love it so much I ended up buying a second one with a timer and automatic shut off for those times I want to go to bed and not have to tend to whatever I'm dehydrating. Around about late August, you will see both Excaliburs, side-by-side, humming along on ... continue reading...
