We invited our 2-year old grandson for a sleepover last night. Very, very fun. :) The three of us fell asleep in our queen bed around midnight, right in the middle of a movie. Dave made it to 2:00 a.m., which is about an hour and forty-five minutes longer than I thought he'd hold out. I woke as he was heading upstairs to finish the night in the guest room, but then I was fully awake and stayed that way until 3:30. I'm horrible about that. Once I'm awake, I start thinking again. Last night it was ... continue reading...

How to Make a Rainbow Rice Bin
When my daughter, Tera, was a little girl, she had a boatload of Barbies in her castle-themed bedroom, and a pink Barbie jeep. She also had several big, expensive porcelain dolls -- all gifts from her grandmother. She had a growing collection of Build-A-Bears, including a cat, a poodle and a bunny. She had real live goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats outside ... along with 12 1/2 acres of trees for climbing and fort-building. She had her own glue gun, and a teetering, ... continue reading...
How to Make Sun-Dried Tomatoes (Without the Sun)
Ah, sun-dried tomatoes. Tangy, umami-full, intense bitelets of summer. (I kind of doubt that anyone will ever find this post by googling "umami-full" or "bitelets," but those just happen to be necessary descriptors.) Is there anyone who doesn't swoon at a jar of sun-dried tomatoes? Well, as nice as it is to open a jar of Trader Joe's sun-dried tomatoes, or even an expensive jar you picked up at some specialty store, it is even better when you're opening a jar of homemade sun-dried ... continue reading...
How to Make a Heart-Shaped Egg
Don't you think all food should be heart-shaped? Yeah, me too. I'm slowly working my way down the list. To my usuals (heart-shaped meatloaf, mashed potatoes, muffins, cupcakes, donuts and cookies), I'm adding one more: heart-shaped eggs. I think they're my favorite. You don't need much. Here's the very short list: Heart-shaped Eggs eggs, hard-boiled and still very warm cardboard (milk cartons work great) rubber bands, 2 per egg knitting needle or chopstick, 1 per ... continue reading...
Make-Ahead Turkey Gravy
I wrote a post in 2010 by the same title as this one in which I told how I make my gravy ahead of time so I don't have to stress over it on Thanksgiving Day. Every year I get a LOT of visitors here who come specifically to read that post. Now that I have a YouTube channel, I thought I'd demonstrate the process there, then bring that video here. Not much has changed, except that I'm adding a little lemon (very little) and butter at the end of the cooking time. You can read the original article ... continue reading...
Make a BIG Christmas Advent Calendar
A buncha-buncha years ago, a friend from work told me about a tradition she was doing with her grandkids. As a grandma myself, I was all ears. Dyann described the big advent calendar she'd made out of a 24-pocket shoe organizer, then told me about how she sent gift boxes full of stocking stuffers to her out-of-state daughters so they could fill her advent calendar with them on December 1. Lucky me, my grandkids are only 15 minutes away, so I wouldn't have to do any shipping. Just a lot of ... continue reading...
